Repair Your Credit History
There are any number of companies advertising in newspapers and on the Internet, who will offer to repair your credit rating for you. You need to remember that these companies can't do anything for you that you can't do for yourself and, in the worst case, some of them are there just to take your money!
If you have a County Court Judgement (CCJ), then that is about as bad as it gets (with the exception of bankruptcy). You can only have a CCJ removed from the court records and your credit files if it has been granted in error or you have paid the creditor in full within one month. If you have paid the debt after one month, then the judgments may be marked as 'satisfied'. There are lenders who will offer you credit even if you have CCJ's, the Vanquis Visa Credit Card is one of these.
The first thing to do when repairing your credit rating is to apply for your credit file from one of the three main credit reference agencies: Experian, Equifax or CallCredit. MyCreditCardGuide.co.uk have teamed up with Experian to offer you a 30-day free trial of CreditExpert which you can use to review your credit file, checking it for errors and even identity theft. Remember, the law entitles you to instruct these agencies to remove any information that is incorrect. The agencies must then respond to you within 28 days, advising you if they have removed the offending entry or if not, why not. You may want to also consider these other steps...
- Check for old store cards and credit cards that you no longer use and close your account if it is still open. This will remove those cards from your credit file making it more appealing to future lenders.
- Make sure that your credit file shows that you are on the electoral register. If you are not, contact your local council. You are unlikely to be eligible for credit unless you are on the register.
- Pay your bills on time as Lenders like to see that you are a regular payer. Any defaults will show on your credit file for 6 years although Lenders are more interested in recent history, so the sooner you start making payments on time, the better.
- Don't just request your credit file once and forget about it - check it periodically and ensure that it is correct. Following these steps over time will help improve your credit history.
Why pay someone else to do these simple steps for you?
